The Charon Retrofit marked the beginning of Retrofit Construction with the deep energy retrofit of a 130-year-old duplex in Montreal’s Point Saint-Charles. This project seamlessly combined three objectives: a primary residence for the founder’s family, a revenue property, and a pilot project for high-performance retrofits.
Undertaking a full envelope retrofit in the heart of the city, between two neighboring buildings, posed significant challenges. Despite these constraints, the project achieved exceptional airtightness with meticulous attention to tricky details. Both units underwent extensive upgrades, including triple-glazed windows, interior and exterior insulation, and a permanent high-performance HVAC system. The work also included modernizing the interiors and adding a three-story extension on the south facade, complete with a rooftop terrace.
As Quebec’s first Net Zero Ready Certified building, the Charon Retrofit set a new benchmark for sustainable construction. The success of this project was pivotal, inspiring the launch of Retrofit Construction as a business. Its achievements garnered widespread attention, including features in La Presse and La Maison du 21e Siècle.
